The San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau (SFCVB) is a private, non-profit membership organization with approximately 75 employees dedicated to promoting San Francisco as a compelling destination for meetings, conventions, trade shows and leisure travel. The Arts and Tourism Program is a partnership between Grants for the Arts (GFTA), the City’s municipal arts funding agency, and the SFCVB. Established in 1991, its goal is to provide San Francisco’s cultural organizations access to the visitor market and to enhance San Francisco’s image as a cultural destination.

Director, Arts and Culture

The Director, Arts and Culture is responsible for the creation and implementation of programs and activities designed to increase the number of visitors to San Francisco through the promotion of arts and cultural events. Programs and projects will be designed to address the Bureau's vision to ensure that San Francisco is the most compelling destination in the world. This person works closely with other Bureau departments to achieve annual goals and objectives. The Director, Arts & Culture will also uphold the organizational values of the SFCVB.

Candidates will be expected to perform in three key areas:

    Marketing Leadership

  • Work closely with Grants for the Arts Hotel Tax Fund, SF Arts Monthly, Arts Commission, Theatre Bay Area, Yerba Buena Cultural Consortium and other local cultural stakeholders to develop mutually beneficial relationships and partnerships.
  • Work to sustain San Francisco's reputation as a leader in the field of Cultural Tourism.
  • Advise local arts and cultural organizations on maximizing their effectiveness in working with the tourism industry, serving as a liaison between the cultural community and the SFCVB.
  • Serve on advisory committees of local arts consortium and major events.
  • Represent the SFCVB at local and regional arts community meetings.
  • Creativity

  • Develop programs that leverage available budgetary resources and enhance the mutual goals of the SFCVB and GFTA.
  • Write and edit Arts and Culture-related content for Bureau publications, Web site, and marketing materials.
  • Design and execute new Arts and Culture promotional programs aimed at the visitor market, such as hotel & museum exhibition packages.
  • Explore potential expansion into areas currently not served or covered by the SFCVB.
  • Administration

  • Oversee administration and management of the Arts and Culture program including compliance with all GFTA reporting requirements to ensure continued funding of the program.
  • Provide fiscal oversight for GFTA funds awarded to San Francisco Arts Monthly and SFArts.org.
  • Develop annual Arts and Culture budget in coordination with Grants for the Arts office.
  • Other projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Must be extremely knowledgeable of many aspects of San Francisco's visual, performing arts, grant writing or arts service organization community.
  • Must anticipate and lead arts and cultural tourism trends. Knowledge of national arts and cultural tourism fields also a plus.
  • Excellent writing skills and general knowledge of print process and design are required.
  • Must be experienced in program development and budget management.
  • Able to work effectively with internal and external groups.
  • Have demonstrated creativity, initiative, and self-motivation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Must have excellent computer skills.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Education and/or Experience:

Minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in arts, cultural, or tourism marketing experience. BA required in a related field.

  • High volume of visitor and client traffic in the Bureau office on a daily basis
  • Daily operation of all types of office equipment
  • Most employees sit in open floor cubicle spaces
  • Kitchen and break room facilities are shared and contain electrical appliances for the employees’ use, i.e. microwave ovens, coffee machines, refrigerators and dishwashers
